Hypoallergenic Cavapoos: Why They’re the Perfect Family Pet

For those who suffer from allergies but dream of having a furry companion, finding the right dog breed can be a challenge. Enter the Cavapoo—a charming and intelligent hybrid that is not only known for its affectionate nature but also for its hypoallergenic qualities. Thanks to its Poodle lineage, the Cavapoo has become a popular choice among allergy sufferers who seek a low-shedding, low-dander pet that fits seamlessly into their lives. In this blog, we’ll explore what makes the Cavapoo a hypoallergenic option, how to care for its unique coat, and why this delightful breed might be the perfect fit for those who love dogs but are sensitive to allergens.

What Does “Hypoallergenic” Mean In Terms Of Dogs?

In the dictionary, hypoallergenic is defined as having little likelihood of causing an allergic response. Now, it’s important to remember that dogs are still dogs. They will still produce dander, shed hair, and go outside. However, there are breeds that are considered to be hypoallergenic because they are low-shedding and produce less dander than other breeds.

What Makes A Dog Hypoallergenic?

While it is unlikely that any dog is 100% hypoallergenic, there are several breeds that are considered extremely low-shedding and more allergy free than other breeds. Cavapoos are bred from Poodles and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Poodles are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed however, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not considered to be hypoallergenic. The Cavapoo pup could have a coat similar to their Poodle parent or a coat more similar to their Spaniel parent. Either way, Cavapoos are considered to be low-shedding which also helps reduce allergens and dander in your home.

The Cavapoo Parent Breeds: Poodle & Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavapoos are considered a hybrid or “designer” breed as they are bred from a Poodle and a King Cavalier Charles Spaniel. Alternatively, they can also be bred from a Cavapoo and a King Cavalier Charles Spaniel, although this breeding is less desirable.

With hybrid breeds, the offspring can take on characteristics of either parent breed. Meaning that while some Cavapoos have a curly coat similar to their poodle parent, they can also have a straight coat more like their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent. In this breed combination, the Poodle is the parent that possesses the hypoallergenic qualities so the hypoallergenic qualities of your Cavapoo are dependent upon their poodle parentage. It is important to discuss this with the breeder of your choice.

Cavapoo Coat Types and Their Impact On Allergies

Cavapoos have either a wavy or curly coat. However, they can sometimes take on coat characteristics of their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent. Cavapoos with a wavy or curly coat are less likely to shed which makes them more hypoallergenic. Cavapoos with a straight coat have more influence from their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent. Straight coats are more likely to shed which can increase the risk of allergies. This is an important consideration when choosing the right Cavapoo.

Coat Care For Your Cavapoo

Cavapoos do require regular brushing and grooming to keep their coat healthy and free of shedding, mats, and tangles. It is also important to bathe them regularly to keep skin and coat clean and free of dander and other allergens. Regular coat care will also keep your Cavapoo looking their best. Cavapoos will need to be bathed every 2-4 weeks and seen by a professional groomer every 6-8 weeks. A professional groomer will be able to handle trimming their coat and nails as well as cleaning their ears, so don’t worry if you can’t do those delicate tasks at home.

Cavapoos & Allergies

Cavapoos can have sensitive skin and can suffer from allergies themselves, even though they are often sought after for being hypoallergenic. It is important to have regular veterinary check ups and great quality kibble to reduce exposure to allergens. You can also put clothing on your Cavapoo. Clothing can help reduce their exposure to allergens and it can help reduce the spread of hair and dander around your home. It is also important to make sure your Cavapoo is receiving proper nutrition. We recommend feeding your pup foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals for optimal nutrition. Feeding your pup the proper food will contribute to the health of their skin, coat, and overall health.

Choosing The Right Cavapoo For You

When it comes to choosing the right Cavapoo for you, it is important to research reputable breeders, contact them, check reviews, and ask for referrals. When you find a reputable breeder, it’s important to discuss the parental lineage so you are aware of the type of traits your Cavapoo may possess, especially if you need a hypoallergenic breed. Cavapoos come in many different colors and a few different sizes. Depending on the size of their poodle parent, Cavapoos can come in standard, mini, or toy sizes. Make sure to research and decide which size would be the best fit for your life and living situation.

Colors And Coat Types Of Cavapoos

There are several different colors that are typical for the Cavapoo.

  • Red – a deep striking hue.
  • Apricot – a light peach color that can range from pale cream to a deeper peachy color.
  • Tri-Color – a combination of 3 colors. Typically, black, white, and tan.
  • Blenheim – a white coat with chestnut markings.

There are also a few different types of coat that your Cavapoo may have.

  • Curly – inherited from their Poodle parent, this coat consists of tight curls often making this the most hypoallergenic coat as this is the lowest shedding coat type.
  • Wavy – a combination of the Poodles curls and the Cavalier King Charles straighter coat, this type is loose and soft, making this coat type more likely to shed.
  • Straight – this coat is more like that of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and more likely to shed.

Keeping Your Cavapoo Healthy

Once you fall in love with your new hypoallergenic Cavapoo pup, you will want to keep them healthy as long as possible. Jones Farm offers 24/7 support when it comes to health concerns related to your Cavapoo. It is also important to take your pup to the vet regularly, groom them regularly, and have them professionally groomed. Speak with your breeder in regard to any questions you have about what food to feed your new pup and keep small objects away from them.

There are also many different foods that are dangerous to your pup: grapes, raisins, garlic, onion, avocados, alcohol and other fermented beverages, stimulants like caffeine, exotic nuts, and uncooked bread. There are also other dangerous substances that your dog could potentially come in contact with in your home such as: household cleaners, human medications, pest control products, car fluids, garden chemicals, indoor plants/greenery, and aromatherapy products. Before bringing your new pup home, make sure these products are out of their reach and have dog-safe treats and food available.

Cavapoos possess many great traits other than being hypoallergenic. They are cute, cuddly, playful, smart, and loyal. They are small which makes them great for many different types of lifestyles and living situations. No matter what your reasons are for wanting a Cavapoo, we are sure you won’t regret your decision.
