Keeping It Natural: How We Stay Ahead of Fleas and Ticks – the Gentle Way
At Jones Farm Puppies, we believe that raising healthy, happy puppies starts with a natural approach to everything we do—right down to how we handle flea and tick prevention.
We get asked all the time how we keep our pups comfortable and pest-free without harsh chemicals or heavy-duty medications. The answer? A simple routine, a natural product we love, and a few good habits that help protect both our animals and our environment.
Let us walk you through how we do it—and how you can, too.
Our Favorite All-Natural Flea Spray
While we don’t manufacture flea products ourselves, we do have a particular all-natural flea spray that we use and highly recommend. It’s made with safe, plant-based ingredients (no harsh chemicals or pesticides) and works wonderfully as part of a regular home care routine.
We love this product so much that we buy it in bulk and include a bottle in every puppy’s take-home pack on adoption day. It’s a great way to give our new puppy families a strong start when it comes to keeping fleas and ticks at bay—naturally.
If you’re already part of our extended puppy family and need a refill, just email us! We’re happy to ship it out to you.
How and When We Use It
The best way to use the flea spray is on your puppy’s bedding. We recommend three times a week—we like to keep it simple with Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Just spray the bedding lightly and let it dry completely before letting your dog back in.
This keeps the environment uninviting for fleas and ticks, without putting anything directly on your pet’s skin or coat. It’s an easy and effective habit to build into your weekly routine.
Spray the Doormat, Too!
One thing we’ve learned from experience: humans carry in more fleas and ticks than dogs do—especially on our shoes and clothing. That’s why we also recommend spraying your doormat with the flea spray. It creates an extra layer of protection right where pests are most likely to enter your home.
Again, just spray lightly and let it dry before walking over it.
Shoes Off, Please
Speaking of shoes—while they’re easy to overlook, they can carry a lot of unwanted guests. Dirt, pesticides, bacteria, and even dangerous viruses like parvo can all hitch a ride on the bottom of a shoe.
That’s why we don’t allow shoes near our puppies, and why we recommend that all of our families remove shoes at the door once their puppy is home. It’s a simple way to create a cleaner, safer environment for a new puppy—especially during those vulnerable early months.
Natural Solutions for a Healthier Home
Our philosophy is simple: natural, consistent care goes a long way. By focusing on prevention rather than reaction, we keep our puppies healthy and comfortable without exposing them to unnecessary chemicals or stress.
The flea spray we recommend has become a staple in our routine—not just because it works, but because it aligns with our values. We love offering it to our new puppy families, and we’re always here to support you if you’d like to get more.
