Originally bred to warm laps in drafty castles and cold carriage rides, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a descendant of the dog featured in many 16th, 17th, and 18th-century paintings from Northern Europe. It is thought that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were bred from Papillons and Cocker and Welsh Springer Spaniels. This breed was also popular among the Royals however, the breed faced extinction when King William III and Queen Mary II took over. To save the breed from extinction, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was bred with the Queen’s favorite breed, the Pug. This resulted in an upturned face, protruding eyes, a flatter nose, and rounder head. About 230 years later, a group of American breeders wanted to recreate the 17th-century version of the breed; longer nose, flatter head, and almond-shaped eyes. By the time this group of breeders received the registration to begin saving the breed, there were only 6 dogs left living. These 6 dogs were used to recreate the 17th-century version of this beautiful breed which is the modern-day Cavalier King Charles Spaniel you see today.
Poodles
Poodles are widely believed to have originated in Germany but are very popular in France. Poodles were bred to be water retrievers for wildfowl hunters. The breed’s name comes from the pudel or pudellin which means “to splash in the water.” The larger variations of Poodles would retrieve game from water while smaller variations would perform in circuses.
The Poodle is believed to be a descendant of the now-extinct Barbet and the Hungarian Water Hound.
